Kazakhstan stretches from Eastern Europe to Central Asia. It is the world's largest landlocked country and has borders with Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. It also adjoins a large part of the Caspian Sea.
Oil, gas and mineral extraction form the backbone of Kazakhstan’s economy. Agriculture accounts for roughly 5% of the country’s GDP.
The former capital and largest city, Almaty, remains the major commercial and cultural centre of Kazakhstan. Located in the mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan, the city is estimated to have 125 fountains.
