Armenia is a landlocked country situated in Eastern Europe between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It’s bordered by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey. It gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
Armenia is mostly mountainous with fast flowing rivers and few forests. Around 15 per cent of the land is arable with fruit, vegetables and livestock being the main agricultural output. Almost half of the working population is involved in agriculture. Natural resources include small deposits of gold, copper, molybdenum, zinc and bauxite.
The capital, Yerevan, is home to around half the country’s population.
